Caren Lyn Tackett: Raising awareness for mental illness through music is natural for me. I have lived it in many ways: from its hold on my family, to its prominence in our community. In 2005, I read a powerful article which awakened me to the misdiagnosis, mistreatment and misplacement of the mentally ill.
Jennifer Gonnerman is a powerful journalist who speaks for those who can’t speak for themselves Article As an artist, my creative inspiration has always been to shed light upon ignored causes that stunt the positive evolution of humanity. SLIDE was created after years of research, as my way to give a voice to the voiceless.
Upon completion it will be a concept album with accompanying videos, which tell the tale of a woman diagnosed with mental illness who is trapped within our dysfunctional system. As we launch this project, the support of the mental health community is tantamount to SLIDE’s success- and this support will be very directly reciprocated. Our intention is to align with reputable agencies that advocate for the mentally ill.
With every live performance of SLIDE, we’ll promote our host city’s local advocates, as well as donate a percentage of our live performances to that local organization. Struggle, as well as hope for a new understanding of what it means to be mentally ill – this is SLIDE.
Through music,”SLIDE” raises awareness of a very important issue in society: the mistreatment, misdiagnosis, and misplacement of the mentally ill.
